‘Tang Ping’ is a Mandarin expression that speaks to pockets of youth counterculture, in which young people in China have rejected societal norms and expectations to live a more carefree life, outside of overworking and over-achieving.

‘This is something I recognised in British and European culture, too’ says Ben, ‘as all people a little bit younger than me have known is this crumbling version of late-stage capitalism. They year I started university was the year of the sub-prime crisis, so in many ways I felt the rug being pulled out from underneath my feet, and it is something that occupies my thoughts quite a lot. I sort of feel like I’m on the precipice of a lot of this in some respect, but these four songs incorporate my lived experience and what I am aware of as a compassionate observer. These songs are about so much in capitalism that I find fascinating, infuriating and terrifying.’
