I slept through the celebration So you told me that I live like a ghost Always on the periphery Then you smiled and went for a smoke This place is an artefact No mystery is left intact Places like this get so lonely And we’re becoming OK with that. Thank ourselves for temporary
2.
Coastguard 02:18
New shoes False starts A legacy of leaving people living in the dark Dog shit White wine 2 can dine for £5.99 New builds Public art A legacy of leaving people living in the dark. I go and have a word with the coastguard. The coastguard is browbeaten.
3.
Teach Away 01:58
Browbeaten on the precipice of youth Mourning opportunity never seen through My old friends keep themselves to themselves Pulling pints and stacking shelves Trace my steps everywhere that I go I don’t know my arse from my elbow Met a guy by the underpass With flyers and stickers and a splitter van And he told me I could teach away By example we will lead. A native speaking tongue is all that you need And he made me feel ill at ease When he said ‘I’m happy here but I’m glad I’m not Chinese’ Of his friend, I’m pretty wary The microaggressions of a Western missionary Doesn’t feel like empowerment When I’m telling you to ‘lose the accent.’ And they told me I could teach away
4.
Summer lawns on an autumn morning I was saved from bowling alone On the gable end you’re smiling A new life my tired eyes have been shown Civic centre with my kinsman As the bells sing ‘So Long Marianne’ Get a job to keep things going Better pass my driving test Never thought I’d be building something Never thought I’d feather a nest By St Peters basin Feeling time pass in the quay Take a train to the coast Nothing matters, it happens with ease And on the metro platform, Sing ‘So Long Marianne’
5.
Dying Alone 02:30
There are boxes of books by the stairs You put your clothes in bin bags, things you do and don’t wear. Tolerance is the noblest of things As long as its requited And the pendulum swings Overheard you on the telephone Saying you were scared of dying alone. The strangest of things, The freshest of starts Repeating and repealing though a lifetime of hearts Tolerance is the noblest thing As long as it’s requited and the pendulum swings. Overheard you on the telephone saying you were scared of dying alone.
6.
Sun-bleached 03:42
Now, now that our love has gone My memories are bleached by the sun.
7.
This place used to be a shithole Now it’s a shithole with expensive coffee shops And the people who live round here now Refer to the taxpayer as a single entity Victimised Cap in hand The façade is still immaculate on the old Kwik Save building I bet that place is full of rats They play bingo in the old church hall now And Sunday service happens in the old bingo hall Cool The beer garden and the car park are one in the same But nobody really seems to mind To get to the pub I have to pass a sandwich shop. The owner of the shop is obsessed with the litany of injustices faced by television presenter John Leslie. He’ll talk about them at any given opportunity. So I give it a wide berth. I enjoy an afternoon pint with gravel underfoot, watching a sparrow feed its young. Later on I might go to some of the rougher pubs because they are a lot cheaper and I might even sing a Robbie Williams song on the karaoke. They play bingo in the old church hall now And Sunday service happens in the old bingo hall This place used to be a shithole Now it’s a shithole with expensive coffee shops
8.
Three days of sideways rain won’t leave you wanting A sparrow told me that, she lives in my garden. Moved to the big city and I got into twitching What futile lives they lead but I can’t tell the difference And we protect ourselves Aware of danger And when the weather dips She’ll be somewhere different Moved to the big city and I got into drinking What futile lives they lead but I can’t tell the difference.

about

Amateur Trepanning is the debut solo record from Ben Lowes-Smith (Slow Decades). Written and recorded over a short burst in Spring 2021, Ben took an approach inspired by Dogme cinema to making the record- writing and recording songs predominantly using a bass guitar and a synthesiser in short, concentrated bursts.
